One screen cut in two

Start a table on one phone or tablet with two people on it and pick Whack-a-Mole. The screen splits in two: a zone at each player's edge, turned to face them, each washed in its player's colour, and a line in both colours where the zones meet.

Sit across from each other with the device flat between you. Each zone is a field of its own with its own moles, and every mole you bop pops up in the other zone straight away. The tug-of-war bar lies along the cut, so you both read it from your own side.

Smaller pockets, the same rules

A shared screen has less room, so the pockets in a zone sit closer together, as close as 50 millimetres apart, and the margins are tighter. A tablet gives you the most room; on a phone two people fit, sitting close. On a tablet held sideways, each half holds one row of pockets.

Everything else plays as in whack a mole on two phones. Misses give ground away and stun the spot, four fingers at once are one miss, and every bop shows its reaction time. When it ends, each zone gets its own copy of the end card, facing its player and naming the winner.

Three or four on a tablet

A tablet can take up to four players, one at each edge, each with a zone of their own. With three or four the bar is shared, bopped moles go to whoever leads, and the last one with ground left wins, as in 4 player whack a mole.

Short of a second player? A bot can take the other zone. It plays right there on your screen, its taps judged like a finger's, so you can watch it miss now and then. Cooperative works on one screen too: all the zones defend the field together.
