Two zones, one screen
Start a table on one phone or tablet with two people on it and pick Hot Potato. The screen, as you hold it when the match starts, is cut into two zones at the ends of its long side, one facing each of you, and each zone has its own fuse.
Sit across from each other with the device flat between you. The potato crosses the line between the zones exactly as it would cross a seam between two phones, and your fuse burns only while it's in your zone. Each fuse sits in its own zone, upright for the player it belongs to. With a phone each, hot potato on two phones gives each player a whole screen.
Flicks sized for one screen
A zone is much shallower than a whole screen, so the friction scales up to match: a flick carries the potato about as many fields as it would across two devices, rather than off the far edge every time. Both of you play at once, and a flick works from anywhere in your own zone.
Everything else is the same game: pick a fuse of 12, 20 or 30 seconds, the heat rises as you play, and power-ups appear for the potato to roll over. When double trouble drops a second potato, both of you can be flicking at the same moment, a finger each. Whack-a-mole for two splits a screen into zones the same way.
Who won, facing both of you
When someone is cooked, the end card comes up twice, one copy facing each edge, naming the winner, so neither of you reads it upside down.
Playing alone? The other zone can be a bot. It plays by the same rules from the same device, and its zone shows no hints.
Pass and play: questions and answers
Can two people play on one phone?
Yes, the screen splits into a zone for each of you, with a fuse each.
Can three share a tablet?
No, one device alone seats two; more players need more devices.
Can one of us be a bot?
Yes, the bot takes the other zone and plays from the same device.
Do we need an app?
No, it runs in the browser on the phone or tablet you already have.
