One board between two players

Start a table on one phone or tablet with two people on it and pick Checkers: the whole 8 × 8 board fills the screen, facing the first player, and stays that way for the whole game. There is no flip after each move and no card to hand over.

Sit across from each other with the device flat between you, or side by side. The screen's edges glow in the mover's colour and a ring circles their face on the badge, so a glance tells you whose turn it is. 2 player chess shares a screen the same way.

The board explains itself

Pieces that can move glow underneath. Tap one that can't while a capture is due and a note says Capture first, while the pieces that must capture pulse. When only one piece can move, it is picked for you.

A multi-jump draws its path as you go, crosses out the pieces it takes and hops on by itself when there's only one way to continue. Tap the moving piece to take the path back. Resign always acts for the player to move and hides on the other player's turn, so a stray tap can't end their game. With a phone each, checkers on two phones splits the board between you.

Rules and clocks on one screen

Russian checkers, or shashki, is the default: men capture backward and kings fly. English draughts is the other choice. Pick before the game; both of you play by the same rules on the same board.

A move timer of 15, 30 or 60 seconds plays a random legal move for whoever lets it run out, and a clock of 5, 10 or 15 minutes each ends the game for the one who runs out. Alone on the device? Make the second seat a bot and play checkers vs the computer.
